Korrax (core-axe) are large, giraffe-sized lithotrophic nectarivores native to Charon.

They are popular prey among Charonites; the aggressive creatures provide both a challenge and a wealth of usable materials. Their sturdy, light-weight bones make excellent weapons; their thick hide can be used to make tough, flexible armor; the korrax proboscis and antennae make for popular hunting trophies and decorations; even their acidic digestive fluid is used in Charonite tattooing ceremonies, making it easier to mark their tough flesh.

Physiology[]

Korrax are large, three-legged creatures that rely on minerals for sustenance. Like all fauna on Charon, they are silicone-based, ammonia drinking, chlorine breathers. Atop their long necks sits a vaguely insectoid head, topped with two electrosensitive antennae. These antennae allow them to detect other lifeforms hundreds of feet away. Like the grekk, the also have thick cilia that are sensitive to smell, allowing them to anticipate predators and locate food sources. They also have a large, fatty hump on their backs which they use to store ammonia and minerals when traveling between the small groves that dot Charons' surface.

Korraxx also have a long, retractable, bone proboscis hidden in a fleshy sheath that they use to pierce the native flora and drain them of their mineral-rich fluids. This proboscis secretes a highly acidic digestive fluid capable of dissolving the thick outer layer of tissue surrounding most flora. When in danger, korrax can spit this fluid at predators; if that fails to repel them, their hind leg is capable of delivering a powerful, bone-crushing blow.

Behavior[]

Korrax travel in herds of up to 20 individuals, mainly for protection from predators. They travel from small forest to small forest, draining the native plant life of their fluids and nutrients. When traveling the many open, barren wastelands of Charon, korrax largely rely on exposed mineral deposits for nourishment. When threatened, korrax will form a protective circle around their young, hooting and calling loudly in an attempt to scare off the predator. If that fails, the elder males will charge at the predator, and will spray their acidic digestive fluid at the target until it runs off.
